hi, claude!

i AM a tom lehrer fan. i'd forgotten that one, though, so thanks for reminding me.

saw you over at rough theory [i've fallen in love with that site], which i discovered via acephalous' meme experiment.

Oh crap, is this another site I'm going to have to read? (More on the diaspora one of these days. I miss the days of following one or two discussion hubs.)

That seems like a good interpretation of the issue. I want to add that RT's take on the ownership of subjects discussed in class sounds like what I know of patent law (woefully little, but...), namely with respect to "who's an inventor." You not only have to come up with the idea, but you have to reduce it to practice. Harder, sure, in the realm of pure ideas than it is with the invention of gizmos, but similar enough. (Said professor is a jackass.)

I fear that this whole plagiarism debate may be a meme, btw, and by this point (you know, two days later) I'm mildly annoyed about my part in it.

oh, man! we could have a meme race with acephalous! our meme is faster than your meme! and more widespread! fortunately, i'm too lazy to actually keep up with such a project.

and meme is just an annoying word anyway.

i blame my plagiarism participation on urq. if he hadn't said let slip the adorable puppies of war ....

intellectual property is such an odd duck. my family tree runneth over with artists, photographers, writers, inventors, and the odd musician or two. there needs to be some protection in place for their ability to make a living. i'm all for it, believe me, as i hope to one day make a living that way too.

on the other hand, the sharing of words and ideas is such an important part of social cohesion that it's just plain stupid to put onerous restrictions on their use, or to beat up on people for having the same ideas independently.

on the other other hand, don't even get me started on patenting novel organisms, or bits of their dna, or ....

I'm woefully uninformed on patent issues because (a) I produce so little of actual value, and (b) when I do, I find my company isn't really as sincere as they should be about their goals of innovation (they don't want to spring for the application unless it's a real home run, or unless it's popular).

It does get in the way sometimes, but it's my impression that in the bio/biochem/drug fields, it's worlds more annoying.

That was a funny line of urq's, btw. Glad you scooped it.

just trying to figger out who this blog belongs to...hipparchia? I followed the link from sydbristow's blog.

Well anyway, I like it.

hi, topazz! thanks.

i seem to be only sporadically inspired in the poetry arena, and the results are mostly uninspired, but do drop by occasionally. i'll try to keep up with it a bit more in the future.

and feel free to leave comments, good or bad, on any of my attempts here.

oh. yes, it's me, hipparchia-of-the-several-nics. my apologies. i wasn't trying to be deliberately obfuscatory. it just worked out that way.
